Why choose us?
At Learning Steps Childcare Centre, every day begins with wonder and ends with joy. Our teachers spark curiosity, kindness and confidence through meaningful play and genuine care. Families choose us because every child is celebrated, every voice is heard and every little step leads to something extraordinary.
Our Vision and Philosophy
At Learning Steps Childcare Centre, our vision is to create an inclusive, nurturing community where every tamaiti, whānau and teacher feels a sense of belonging. We welcome everyone to share their strengths, knowledge and culture, helping us shape a curriculum that reflects our community.
We see our tamariki as both learners and kaitiaki — guardians of their environment and the world around them. Through sustainable practices, exploration and care, children learn to respect nature and take pride in protecting it for the future.
We believe every child is a unique taonga, nurtured in a safe, caring and fun environment. Guided by Te Whāriki, NELP and key early childhood theorists, our teachers create meaningful, play-based learning experiences that foster curiosity, confidence and independence. Together with whānau, we provide a true home-away-from-home, where every step is a step toward growth, connection and lifelong learning.
Kahikatea
In our Kahikatea Room, we provide nurturing, high quality care for our youngest tamariki aged 15 months and under. With a calm 1:4 ratio, each child receives gentle, individual attention in a peaceful and engaging environment. Our qualified teachers create meaningful care moments every day, encouraging early exploration, curiosity and a sense of belonging. Through warm relationships and responsive routines, our tamariki feel safe, loved and supported as they take their first steps in learning and discovery.
Maire
In our Maire Room, we provide quality care moments for tamariki aged 15 months to 3 years, with a supportive 1:5 ratio. Our caring teachers create a warm, engaging environment where children can explore, play and grow alongside others. Through shared experiences, our tamariki develop social skills, build friendships and gain a strong sense of belonging within their learning community.
Pohutakawa
In our Pohutukawa Room, we provide quality care and an enriched learning programme for tamariki aged 3 to 6 years, with a supportive 1:8 ratio. Our creative environment encourages independence, confidence and self-help skills through play and exploration. Teachers guide children to think critically, solve problems and work together, helping them grow into capable and confident learners. For our four-year-olds and above, we offer a well-structured transition-to-school programme that supports social, emotional and academic readiness, ensuring every child feels prepared and excited for their next learning journey at primary school.
Where every child is valued, every moment is meaningful and every step leads to confident, joyful learning.
Why we are different
At Learning Steps we go beyond childcare as we nurture confident, curious and compassionate learners in a place that truly feels like home.
In house chef
Our in-house chef prepares healthy, flavourful meals each day using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We promote healthy eating from a young age and cater to each child’s dietary needs, supporting the wellbeing and growth of all our tamariki.
Excursions
We take our tamariki on regular walks to the nearby park to support physical wellbeing and a love for nature. We also plan engaging excursions that extend learning beyond the centre, giving children the chance to explore new places, experience new things and connect with the world around them.
Trasition to school
In our preschool room, tamariki take part in engaging, school-readiness activities that encourage confidence, curiosity and independence. Through early reading, writing and problem-solving experiences, children develop the skills they need to thrive in a classroom setting and feel eager for the next stage of their learning journey.
